Closing Rio’s Waste Land

The Jardim de Gramacho dump of Rio de Janeiro, which was featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary Waste Land, will close this week. According to local media, the end of Jardim de Gramacho is scheduled for June 1st, right before Rio+20, which will take place from June 13 until June 22 in Rio de Janeiro.
There are also efforts to shut down most of the Chureca and right now, the city of Managua with the help of the Spanish government is building new houses for the Churequeros as well as a recycling plant, but hundreds of men, women and children keep working in the dump.
